Alan was born and raised in Swindon and has been driving for over 44 years in total.
The original photo above was taken of Alan with his first car, his beloved Ford Escort Mk2 (the 1.1L version in the popular Olympic Blue), shortly after he'd passed his practical driving test on Tuesday, 31st August 1982. Aged 17, he had successfully passed his test at the first attempt.
Just under ten years later, Alan obtained his HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) Class 1 licence. Also known as Category C+E or LGV (Large Goods Vehicle), this allows you to drive the largest and heaviest vehicles on the road, weighing over 7.5 tonnes and featuring a detachable trailer up to a total combination weight of 44 tonnes. Before 1992, HGV was the widely accepted term for commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. However, when the European Union standardised licensing categories, the UK adopted LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) as the official term. Although LGV is the official term, HGV still remains in common use, and today, both terms refer to the same category of commercial lorries.
Alan passed this test, first time, on Monday, 1st April 1991 (No, it wasn't an April Fool!)
After a life-long interest in driving, Alan became an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) on Wednesday, 31st July 1996. An ADI is a fully qualified, DVSA-registered professional legally permitted to charge for driving lessons in the UK.
This led to a highly successful career as a driving instructor, with Alan helping many hundreds of students to pass their practical driving tests. After working with several well known Swindon-based driving schools, Alan took the step of launching his own intensive driving courses business. Best Driving Courses was officially created in 2015. He also now owns and runs the highly regarded Learning2Drive company, one of the very first intensive courses driving schools in the UK along with Drivingcourses.uk
In the same year, he passed his Motorcycle test on 1st, September - completing a hat-trick of road-based driving tests, two of which were passed in Swindon with the motorcycle test passed in Newbury.
Almost 44 years after the photo of Alan washing his first car was taken, he returned to the exact same spot on Shelley Street in Swindon to have his photo taken with the current tuition vehicle, another Ford - but this time a Focus ST Line.
...And he's still wearing Adidas!
drivingcourses.uk are one of the UK's intensive driving courses specialists, successfully helping people pass their driving test with our carefully structured intensive courses. Our unique residential courses give learner drivers the opportunity to focus on their driving course and pass their test within a much shorter time than would otherwise be possible.
Courses are normally available four weeks ahead, although students who can offer flexibility on their start date can sometimes find an earlier start, often as soon as next week. Call us on 07912 447089 to ask about earlier driving course start dates.
Many students from across the UK decide to take their course on a residential basis. These courses are arranged from our Swindon centre in Wiltshire. Residential students are collected daily from their accommodation by their instructor.
The success students achieve with our intensive courses has always been down to the hard work of our fully qualified DVSA approved driving instructors. We get to know learner drivers, their needs and how to prepare for the practical driving test. This enables students to be ready to pass the driving test within 7 days or less.
As a sister company to Best Driving Courses, we pride ourselves on our 35 year history of helping literally thousands of drivers to pass their test quickly and efficiently. Best Driving Courses also follows all current government guidelines and regulations regarding Covid. We welcome emails and phone calls and will always treat your requirements and questions with respect.
"Passed first time thanks to Alan at Best Driving Courses in Swindon! He was patient, professional, and always made me feel confident behind the wheel. The best part was my examiner saying she knew I’d be a great driver just because Alan was my instructor — which says everything about how good he is. Highly recommend!"
